Placenta Encapsulation

Placenta Encapsulation is the process of preparing a placenta for ingestion.

In 2010 I successfully completed a course offered by Placenta Benefits International (PBi). This is a comprehensive training to learn about the placenta & its preparation for consumption, following proper food safe handling and OSHA guidelines.

Your baby's placenta, in capsule form, is believed to:
  • help replenish the body's energy (chi), like a restorative tonic
  • support good lactation
  • decrease likelihood of baby blues
  • lessen fatigue, which is known to be a contributing factor for PPD (postpartum depression)
  • decrease likelihood of iron deficiency

Placenta contains:

  • Hemoglobin (replenishes iron)
  • Gammaglobulin (immune booster, prevents infection)
  • Cortisone (reduces stress by lowering cortisol)
  • POEF (increases natural endorphins)
  • HPL (stimulates milk production)
  • Prolactin (produces breast milk)
  • Prostaglandins (reduce inflammation)
  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (helps with stress, weight regulation)
  • Oxyocin (bonding, well-being)
  • Urokinase inhibiting factor XIII (wound healing and reduction of bleeding)
  • Interferon (infection prevention, immune stimulation)

For women who have experienced anemia during pregnancy or had heavy blood loss after the birth, or those who experienced PPD or a mood disorder with a previous pregnancy, placenta is beneficial.

Placenta Encapsulation Services

PBi technique prepares placenta by lightly steaming it. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors agree this method is in keeping with TCM principles which state that new mothers need foods that are warming. They should avoid cooling foods, like raw food. As they are in a weakened state post birth, their 'chi' (energy) is low, so they need to be warmed.

Once dehydration is complete the dried placenta is ground and put into capsules. These are taken daily during the immediate postpartum period. As the pills are intended for postpartum recovery, it's recommended that they are all taken during that time.

I receive positive feedback from mothers who take placenta pills. I am encouraged by their stories. What a simple solution to support postpartum recovery!

Testimonials

"I received the pills about 4 days after giving birth. Prior to taking I was faced feeling depressed and the urge to cry at everything as well as not feeling emotionally balanced. After the first round of the pills I felt like a cloud had lifted.  I was more balanced and calm almost immediately!  I also had no problems with milk supply and breast-feeding and I am sure this has to do with taking the placenta pills."

"Taking placenta has been a great decision in both of my pregnancies. In the days following my births, I took capsules and felt great – my mood was lifted and I did not experience any postpartum blues. Particularly for my second birth, even with the sleep deprivation and a toddler to manage, I felt good with a high level of energy. Debra has been great to work with. I would recommend her to anyone looking into placenta encapsulation services."
