My Professional Background and Experience
Birth Doula Training
In the early 1990's I was one of the first D.O.N.A. certified birth doulas in Vancouver. Prior to that, in 1989, I trained as a 'Labour Support Person' as the word doula hadn't been created yet! I then began attending births and providing postpartum doula care to families with newborns. (See Vancouver Sun story here & here.) In 1992 I attended an advanced D.O.N.A. birth 'doula' training with Penny Simkin.
I am keenly aware of the value of continuing education. This has led me to attend educational conferences on topics such as breastfeeding with Dr. Jack Newman, birth wisdom with Ina May Gaskin, midwife, and Michel Odent, advanced 'Spinning Babies' skills with Gail Tully , the use of the rebozo with Gena Kirby, as well as a Waterbirth International Certification Workshop with Barbara Harper. In 2010 I trained as a 'Hypno-Babies' Doula. Currently I am in training as an Ecstatic Birth Practitioner with Sheila Kamara Hay.
Between 2011-2013 I worked with the BC Women's Best Birth Clinic's VBAC doula study program. Women wanting a VBAC were randomized to receive a birth doula, or not, to determine outcomes with doula care.
I have attended all types of births including vaginal twin and breech birth, VBAC, HBAC and Cesarean. I have worked alongside midwives, family doctors and obstetricians at most hospitals in the Lower Mainland.
Postpartum Doula Training
I trained with N.A.P.C.S. in 1992 and received my certificate from them. I initially worked with midwives providing postpartum care for their clients' families. In 2013 I completed a CAPPA postpartum doula course to refresh my skills and knowledge.
I developed the first postpartum doula training course offered at Douglas College and taught it there in the late 1990's.
I created the first postpartum doula in-home service, 'New Additions' that provided postpartum doulas to Vancouver families. This service worked with the Ministry of Children & Families to provide care to low income and at risk families.
I worked with Mother Me Newborn Care agency for a number of years and currently focus on my private postpartum clients.
Childbirth Educator Training
In 1991 I trained with Informed Birth & Parenting (now ALACE) and certified as a childbirth educator. In 1996 I began teaching with The Lower Mainland Childbearing Society. I teach with them, as well as offering private in home sessions.
